Enterprise se dostane do gravitačního vlivu černé hvězdy a je vystřelena napříč časem i prostorem, až k Zemi dvacátého století. Při přeletu nad Nebraskou je zaměřena vojenskými radary a považována za UFO. Na palubu se navíc dostane vojenský pilot z havarované stíhačky. Mají lidé z Enterprise vůbec nějakou šanci na návrat do vlastní doby, aniž by jejich jednání nevratně narušilo běh historie?
