Při průzkumu zdánlivě pusté planety Excalbia se na palubu Enterprise dostaví značně neobvyklá návštěva: prezident Abraham Lincoln. Ten pozve Kirka a Spocka na návštěvu planety – čímž začne dobrodružství, kterému by se oba raději vyhnuli. Byli totiž vybráni, aby bojovali na straně sil dobra proti největším zloduchům historie.
