Kapitán Kirk se transportuje na planetu Gideon, kde má s tamní vládnou projednat možnosti jejího přijetí do Federace. Něco se ovšem pokazí – kapitán Kirk na Gideon nikdy nedorazí. Namísto toho se objeví někde úplně jinde: zpět na palubě Enterprise, kde ale není ani stopa po zbytku posádky.
