Enterprise už je dlouho na cestě a posádka je unavená. Kapitán Kirk rozhodne využít k rekreaci nedalekou, neobydlenou a pohostinně vyhlížející planetu. Vytoužený odpočinek se však brzy mění v noční můru, protože na planetě se začnou zjevovat až děsivě hmatatelné přízraky.
