Když se na stanici porouchá neopravitelná a nereplikovatelná součástka, Sisko schválí kořistnou výpravu na opuštěnou sesterskou stanici DS9, Empok Nor. Stanice ale zas tak opuštěná není... Runabout je zničen, výsadek ve složení Miles O'Brien, jeho technici, Nog a Garak na stanici uvíznou a nevinná výprava se zvrhne v zápas o přežití. Je všudypřítomná paranoia jen důsledkem depresivnosti místa?
