Na Jadziin popud letí Defiant prozkoumat podivný jev obklopující jednu z planet v kvadrantu Gama. Na planetě kupodivu existuje život: osm tisíc bytostí, potomků posádky Defiantu, který zde před dvěma sty lety ztroskotal. Nebo vlastně teprve ztroskotá. Teď, když Sisko a jeho lidé znají budoucnost, vše záleží už jen na jejich volbě – a jejich svědomí. Jeden z trosečníků však stále žije a už dál nechce držet letité tajemství.
